Sophie Willard Van Sistine is a multimedia artist and writer based in Claremont, California. She graduated from Smith College with a BA in Studio Art in May 2022, and is currently pursuing an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Wales, Trinity St. David. She currently works as a freelance artist, and publishes bi-monthly cartoons in The Claremont Courier and previously created cartoons for The Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, MA. Sophie has experience in illustration, cartooning, installation and performance art, animation, collage, painting, and working with archives. Her work is known for its whimsical, imaginative quality, saturated colors, and vibrant, surrealist patterns. She is passionate about helping other’s share their stories through the written and visual mediums, especially people whose stories have been untold, buried, or ignored. Her current project is a graphic novel-style biography of Welsh Poet Menna Elfyn. When not doing art, she is a yoga teacher for children and adults with special needs at Claremont Yoga, and does face painting at parties.
